Apple iPhone 12 Pro Review

Apple's iPhone 12 Pro is a choice for those who are looking for something more than what the standard iPhone 12 has to offer. You'll still find all the essential standout features of the iPhone 12, like the minimal design, the vibrant new Super Retina XDR OLED display, and 5G network connectivity. But with the Pro you'll also find a variety of different color choices along with several hardware upgrades and greater storage size options.

Four new color options
It is readily apparent that the Apple iPhone 12 Pro is built with the same design ideas and in the same style as the standard iPhone 12. Outwardly it looks essentially the same, featuring the same slender casing, and exactly the same dimensions and weight as the iPhone 12. The main difference here is a purely cosmetic one. With the iPhone 12 Pro you'll have a variety of new color schemes to choose from as Apple has done away with the six standard iPhone 12 colors and replaced them with four new options. Now you'll have a choice between pacific blue, graphite, silver or gold.

An exclusive ceramic hardened glass screen
Certainly one of the more interesting features that both the Apple iPhone 12 Pro and the standard iPhone 12 share is the new ceramic hardened glass screen. Called the ceramic shield, the new screen tech offers greater scratch and damage resistance than the more common gorilla glass used on previous iPhones and Android smartphones. Apple states that the ceramic shield provides up to four times greater performance in drop tests and is tougher than any smartphone glass currently on the market.

A color rich and vibrant display
Now this is where Apple's iPhone 12 really shines and it is immediately noticeable. The Apple iPhone 12 Pro features the same 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display that you'll find on the standard iPhone 12 and it's certainly beautiful to behold when compared to the older IPS technology used in previous generation iPhones. Colors appear rich and more vibrant than ever before and the HDR technology also provides greater luminance and higher contrast ratio than Apple's previous Liquid Retina displays. The iPhone 12 Pro also features the same 2532×1170 resolution and the higher pixel density of the standard iPhone 12.

Increased processing power
At the heart of the iPhone 12 Pro is Apple's next-gen A14 64-bit six-core 3.0 GHz ARMv8 bionic processor. Apple boasts that the A14 provides up to 40 percent faster CPU processing power and 30 percent increased GPU operating performance than the A12 processor used in previous gen iPhones. The Apple A14 chip also includes a new image processor for improved photographic capabilities, a 38 percent increase in transistor count due to the 5nm fabrication process, double the neural engine cores, and a higher max clock speed when compared to Apple's A13 processor.

Memory upgrade and storage options
Among the most notable differences between the Apple iPhone 12 Pro and the standard iPhone 12 are the hardware upgrades. This is where the Pro really begins to stand apart from the hardware features offered with the iPhone 12. To start with memory has been upgraded from the 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM on the standard iPhone 12 to 6 GB of RAM giving the Pro more headroom for multi-tasking and running more demanding apps. Storage space has also been upgraded with Apple ditching the 64 GB option of the iPhone 12 and adding a 512 GB option for the Pro.

Camera upgrades
The Apple iPhone 12 Pro comes with all of the same camera features of the standard iPhone 12 but also comes a few nice upgrades on top of that as well. Alongside the wide and ultra-wide cameras of the iPhone 12 there is the addition of a third 12 MP camera featuring a 58 mm telephoto focal length for capturing those far away objects with greater clarity. Another new feature of the iPhone 12 Pro is the addition of a Lidar (light detection and ranging) scanner. The Lidar technology adds depth scanning photo enhancement features and can also be used for Augmented Reality and 3D scanning.

Some interface adjustments
The iPhone 12 Pro comes stock with Apple's latest iOS 14 mobile operating system which offers a bit more of a compact user interface style along with a few new features. Multitasking now seems better with the scaled down app interfaces allowing you to more easily work with other apps at the same time. There is also the addition of an app drawer called the App Library for listing and categorizing all of your installed apps.

More apps and features with iOS 14
With iOS 14 the Apple iPhone 12 Pro also comes some new apps and features as well as updates to the Apple standards such as FaceTime, Camera, Messages, Maps, Safari, and others. A few of the new features include Apple MagSafe support, redesigned Widgets, a Car Keys feature for the Wallet app, App Clips, and a new Translate app. Apple has also increased security and added some privacy updates and options for iOS 14 as well.
