Apple iPhone 12 Review

Apple's iPhone 12 evolves beyond the previous generation smartphone starting with a thinner and lighter redesign and a new ceramic hardened glass screen exclusive only to Apple's iPhone line of products. Other improvements include some nice internal hardware upgrades such as the vibrant new Super Retina XDR OLED display, a faster A14 processor, a few camera upgrades, and 5G network connectivity.

A new look for a new generation
The outer design changes for the Apple iPhone 12 may seem somewhat minimal on paper but it is still amazing that they are able to continue to make reductions to the size of what is already a thin and light device. But Apple has done just that and managed to reduce the width by 4.2 millimeters as well as the depth of the device by about a millimeter. The weight of the iPhone 12 has also been reduced by 30 grams which leaves it weighing it at a light 164 grams. Apple has also reduced the size of the bezels by 35 percent providing more screen estate than previous models. A choice of six colors are still available but Apple has altered the schemes a bit with some slightly different shades and replaced the yellow choice with a new blue one.

An exclusive ceramic hardened glass screen
It may not be very noticeable at first glance but certainly one of the more interesting upgrades to the Apple iPhone 12 is the new ceramic hardened glass screen. Called the ceramic shield, the new screen tech offers greater scratch and damage resistance than the more common gorilla glass used on previous iPhones and Android smartphones. Apple states that the ceramic shield provides up to four times greater performance in drop tests and is tougher than any smartphone glass currently on the market.

A color rich and vibrant new display
Now this is where the upgrades to Apple's iPhone 12 really shine through and it is immediately noticeable. The new 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display is gorgeous to behold when compared to the older IPS technology used in previous generation iPhones. Colors appear rich and more vibrant than ever before and the HDR technology also provides greater luminance and higher contrast ratio than Apple's previous Liquid Retina displays. The display resolution of the iPhone 12 has also been increased to 2532×1170 from the lower 1792×828 resolution of the iPhone 11 offering a greater pixel density than before.

Increased processing power
At the heart of the iPhone 12 is Apple's next-gen A14 64-bit six-core 3.0 GHz ARMv8 bionic processor. Apple boasts that the A14 provides up to 40 percent faster CPU processing power and 30 percent increased GPU operating performance than the A12 processor used in previous gen iPhones. The Apple A14 chip also includes a new image processor for improved photographic capabilities, a 38 percent increase in transistor count due to the 5nm fabrication process, double the neural engine cores, and a higher max clock speed when compared to Apple's A13 processor.

Camera upgrades
While they may not be anything groundbreaking, the Apple iPhone 12 does comes with a few noteworthy camera upgrades. Overall the camera specs do look quite similar to the specs of the last-gen iPhone 11 including the dual 12 Megapixel main and ultra-wide cameras along with other features that they share. However, changes have been made to the aperture of the main camera of the iPhone 12 which allow for brighter and better looking photos when taken during low-light conditions. Other noteworthy features include the new improved Smart HDR 3 technology and HDR video recording, as well as a new night mode time-lapse feature.

A few interface updates
The iPhone 12 comes stock with Apple's latest iOS 14 mobile operating system which offers a bit more of a compact user interface style along with a few new features. Multitasking now seems better with the scaled down app interfaces allowing you to more easily work with other apps at the same time. There is also the addition of an app drawer called the App Library for listing and categorizing all of your installed apps.

More apps and features with iOS 14
