Just earlier today Apple took to the stage at their annual World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC14) and revealed a host of new features for their soon-to-be-released iOS 8 mobile operating system. The new iOS 8 platform will come with some great new features, such as interactive notifications and predictive typing and search suggestions.
The release date for Apple's iOS 8 is set for sometime this Fall. End-users will be able to install iOS 8 on all of Apple's latest devices, from the iPhone 4S, and the iPad 2, on up.
Here is a list of iOS 8 hightlights, main features, and updates from WWDC 2014:
Notification Center
Apple added a new interactive notification feature to iOS 8. Now you can recieve and respond to, or choose to ignore, notifications from within any app as well as at the iOS lock screen.
Multitasking
By double tapping the home button you can pull up the iOS 8 multitasking screen which now displays your favorites and recent contacts. You can choose to place phone calls, FaceTime chat, or even send messages to any of your contacts listed here.
Safari
Apple's Safari browser now includes a new sidebar providing quick links to your bookmarks, reading list, and shared links. A new tab view allows you to view all of your open browser tabs.
Apple has added some new quick gestures to iOS 8 mail allowing you to quickly mark, flag, and delete emails. A new feature also allows you to access other emails without closing the message you are currently reading, or when composing a new email.
Spotlight
A new Spotlight suggestions feature offers smart contextual suggestions while searching. Spotlight can provide suggestions from the iStore and iTunes. You will also be able to receive suggested directions and movie showtimes.
Quick Type
Apple's iOS 8 includes a new keyboard feature called Quick Type which provides predictive typing suggestions as you type. The responses Quick Type offers are very personalized depending on what app you are using, and also intelligently adapt to the person you are messaging.
Continuity
New continuity features allow iOS 8 and OS X to communicate and collaborate between devices. You can now start a text message on your iPhone and complete it on your iPad, or even recieve calls from your iPhone on your iPad or Mac.
Messages
Apple has updated their messaging app including a new feature called Tap to Talk which allows you to speak and send an audio message that the recipient can play back. You can now pull up an at-a-glance view of shared photos and attachments, view contact details, and share your location from within any thread.
Group messaging has also been improved with the abilities to add or remove users from a conversation, name threads, and even mute or leave annoying threads.
Family Sharing
A new iOS 8 feature called Family Sharing will allow you to form a family link between up to six Apple ID's that share the same credit card. You will be able to share purchased content, digital media, calenders, and reminders between family members. Family sharing also includes a feature to locate family members and their devices, as well as to approve or decline any app or media purchases made with the shared credit card.
Photos
Apple's new iCloud Photo Library allows you to store all of your photos which can be accessed from all of your Apple devices. You will be able to search through all your photos, or make photo edits and adjustments, with the new smart edit and search features.
Siri
With iOS 8 you will now be able to activate Siri by voice command without having to even touch your device by using the keyphrase "Hey, Siri". Siri will also be able to identify songs with Shazam and make iTunes purchases. Other Siri updates including streaming voice recogznition, and support for 22 more dictation languages.
